Nearly 100 people are to be laid off at a tannery in Clonmel, County Tipperary.

The Ronan Group of companies produces leather goods at its plant in Clonmel and distributes much of it through an office in Dublin.

The job losses will affect both Clonmel and Dublin.

The company has been in difficulty for the past few months because of a lack of orders and says the war in Iraq is having an additional negative impact.

Almost all of the workforce is being laid-off immediately on a temporary basis but a small core will be retained to maintain minimal operations.
