The North's Policing Board is demanding action over a slide in public satisfaction rates with the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

New figures show that over the past 18 months the number of people who think the PSNI has done a good job has dropped from 69% to 61%.

In its new Policing Plan, the Policing Board are challenging PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde and his officers to bring the satisfaction rating up to 70%.

Policing Board Chairman Desmond Rea said the £710m budget for the force meant the improvements demanded could be achieved.

The Board wants an increase in detection levels and reduction in crime rates, a clamp down on sick leave levels and the implementation of a civilianisation programme aimed at getting hundreds more officers out of administrative work and on to patrol.
