The Green Party has expressed serious concern that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will allow the US use Shannon Airport without a second UN resolution and chairman John Gormley TD is insisting that the Dáil be immediately recalled if war is declared.
The party's chairman and foreign affairs spokesperson said that the US should not be allowed to use Shannon without a second resolution.
Mr Gormley said that last week the Taoiseach's replies in the Dáil were part of a 'softening up' exercise to prepare people for the eventuality that the US would be allowed to use Shannon without a second resolution.
He said, 'If war is declared we are insisting that the Dáil be recalled immediately. We would also like to know why the Taoiseach was insisting that a second resolution was not just discussed, but passed. Bertie Ahern has pushed for a second resolution sanctioning war rather than investigating ways to avoid it.'
