Opposition criticism over electronic voting

Updated: 12:33, Thursday, 27 February 2003

Opposition TDs have claimed that the failure of the electronic voting system in the Dáil could have implications for the arrangements proposed for the local and European elections next year.

The Dáil's electronic system, which was introduced last year, has been out of action as a result of a virus.

Another vote was taken in the traditional way today as the Ceann Comhairle undertook to report back to deputies on the problems in the electronic system.

But Fine Gael's Bernard Allen protested that if the system in the Dáil could fail that had implications for the electronic voting system currently being proposed for next year's polls.

That claim was rejected by Government ministers.
