Tokyo conference on aid to Afghanistan

Updated: 09:35, Saturday, 22 February 2003

Countries that have already pledged aid to Afghanistan are meeting in Tokyo this weekend to focus on plans to eradicate the country's deep seated gun culture.

The Afghan authorities want donor countries to support plans for disarming the country's many fighters and creating a national army and police force.

Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, is set to explain the disarmament plan at a conference today, in a bid to win further pledges from donor nations and international agencies.

He said he was confident the international community would stick to its aid pledges even if the United States was to stage a military strike against Iraq.
