The SDLP has called for the establishment of a new police training college in Derry, saying it could cater for both PSNI and Garda recruits.

Mark Durkan, the SDLP leader, said his party has asked both the British and Irish governments to support the proposal.

The North's chief constable, Hugh Orde, has been pressing for a new police training college to replace the outdated facilities at Garnerville on the outskirts of Belfast.

The former Maze prison has been mentioned as a possible site.

But the SDLP argues that Derry would be the ideal location for a training facility, capable of meeting all the needs of the PSNI and complementing the Garda Training College in Templemore.

More co-operation urged

The SDLP has also called for greater North/South co-operation in the battle against organised crime.

According to Mark Durkan, the party believes that the two governments should merge the Dublin-based Criminal Assets Bureau and the North's recently established Assets Recovery Agency.

He said the North's new agency, with 15 staff, is woefully under-resourced compared to the CAB, where 50 people are employed.

He said organised crime in Ireland is organised on a North/South basis and clearly it should be tackled on a North/South basis.
