Rob Elliott, who purchased the last piece of meteorite found in 1999 in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, says yesterday's reports of a fireball over Ireland have generated a lot of interest.
Mr Elliott, who deals in and collects pieces of meteorite, told RTÉ Interactive he would be prepared to pay more than £20,000 for an ultra rare sample. He would first offer the piece to a museum, in exchange for another sample.
Astronomy Ireland says their phone lines have been jammed for two days following the sighting of a fireball in the Irish sky just after 7am yesterday.
David Moore has said they believe a meteorite may have fallen in the north west of the country, or out to sea. "We're confident it's not the south or east," he told RTÉ Interactive.
He added that they are looking for security camera footage taken in the Sligo/Donegal region just after 7am yesterday.
