The Roscommon County Manager, John Tiernan, says a sludge lagoon containing over 300,000 gallons of human sewage is an illegal development.

The lagoon has been constructed on a farm at Kilbegnet along the Roscommon-Galway border.

Mr Tiernan says it is an illegal development which has been carried out without any authority whatsoever.

He says this and two other similar developments, which are also illegal, have been inspected by council officials.

Notices have now been issued to the land owners and the operators of the lagoons calling on them to take immediate steps to remove the material in an environmentally friendly manner within the next four weeks.

Two of the sites contain human sludge. The third is now empty.

The site which was visited by RTÉ yesterday is on land owned by Mr John Hanley of Kilbegnet.

Mr Hanley was last night interviewed by Gardaí about a complaint of assault and criminal damage which has been made against him.

The RTÉ camera which was thrown into the sludge lagoon has now been recovered.
