WHO warning over food contamination

Updated: 09:26, Saturday, 1 February 2003

The World Health Organisation has warned that terrorist groups could try to contaminate food supplies.

In a special report, the leading UN health agency said it had not received any specific warnings of such an attack.

However, it added that deliberate food contamination was 'a real and current threat'.

Jurgen Schlundt, the Director of Food Safety at the WHO, said the booklet was not designed to cause alarm but rather to urge governments to boost their surveillance and emergency response measures.
