The company has also announced that Mulhuddart in West Dublin is among several European locations being considered as a site for a new development.

Three months ago IBM, which employs 4,000 people in the Republic, announced that it needed another 100 marketing staff.

The company has now decided to double that figure and will take on 200 full-time staff over the next three months.

They will boost the company's marketing and sales operations and will target European, Middle Eastern and African markets.

The new staff will be based at IBM's Mulhuddart technology campus and the company says it expects a good response to the job offers because of the depressed state of the technology industry.

And in an interview with The Irish Times this morning, IBM company executive Patrick Toole Junior said Mulhuddart was being considered as a potential hub for a new unit.

Mr Toole said the Republic's location, the strength of its existing operations and the calibre of its staff were all reasons why the site was high up on the list of choices identified by IBM.
