Rain dampened the traditional midnight New Year celebrations in many locations around the country compared with previous years.
However, Gardaí in Dublin and other major urban centres said an improvement in conditions later meant that revellers stayed on the streets well into the early hours.
Up to 1m people turned out in New York to see the famous crystal ball lowered in Times Square.
Other large gatherings were reported in Paris, London, Edinburgh, Berlin and Moscow.
