In London, the Metropolitan police have launched a double murder inquiry after a homeless man found the mutilated remains of a woman and a teenage girl in bin bags in a north London street.

The discovery was made when the man was rummaging for food in large rubbish bins at the back of the College Arms pub in Camden.

He found a bag containing part of a left leg and part of a right leg. Detectives said a post mortem had revealed the legs belonged to the same woman, possibly aged in her 30s.

A search of the area later uncovered a second bag in the bin with a torso of a teenage girl, possibly as young as 14.

'We are treating this as a double murder and our search of the vicinity of the find continues,' Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook said.

The victims have not been identified and police are still conducting forensic tests to determine the cause of death.

'It is difficult to draw any conclusion from the remains due to their poor conditions,' a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said.

She said it was not clear how long the bodies had been dumped on the street but added it was thought to be no longer than a week.
