The call was made by Sean O'Donoghue, Chief Executive of the Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation, at the meeting to assess the outcome of the fisheries talks in Brussels last week.

Fears were expressed that without this intervention there could be confrontations in the New Year.

The meeting was told of press reports from the Spanish port of Vigo, claiming that the Spanish government had secured access to the Irish Box for 200 boats from 1 January.

The Irish South and West Fishermen's Organisation has called a general meeting of all fishermen on the southwest coast to be held in Cork City on Friday next.

They also want the Navy to be fully mobilised to protect the Irish Box from 1 January.
