Residents call for tunnel work halt
Some North Dublin residents have called for work on the Port Tunnel to be stopped after track subsidence caused rail service chaos this morning.
The subsidence occurred shortly before 06.40am, causing disruption to northside Dart services and the Drogheda / Dundalk commuter services, which were forced to terminate at Clontarf Road.
The rail line between Connolly Station and Clontarf Road re-opened just after 10.00am.
The subsidence is close to the site of the Port Tunnel, and Iarnród Éireann has blamed the Port Tunnel works, though initial investigation has proved inconclusive.
However, residents in the Marino area have called for an immediate halt to work on the Port Tunnel. They claim the tunnelling method is on a trial and error basis.
Fintan Cassidy of the Marino Development Action Group said, 'They are due to begin tunnelling under our houses immediately after Christmas and this is the second major calamity they've had with subsidence.'
