A Dutch salvage team has sent divers down to the car carrier that sank in the English Channel on Saturday in an attempt to work out how to remove it from one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

A spokesman said a team had been at the scene of the wreck but had been hampered by bad weather and a high tide.

He added none of the ship's estimated 2,000 tons of oil was leaking into the sea.

The French authorities are to launch an investigation into the sinking of the vessel, which occurred after it collided with a bahamas registered container ship in thick fog.
