The man who led the investigation into the abduction of a Dublin dentist in 1987 has said that the leader of the kidnap gang is entitled to be released from jail, having served 14 years in prison.

The former Garda Chief Superintendent, Bill Herlihy, made the comment after it emerged that Dessie O'Hare, who is serving 40 years for kidnapping and mutilating John O'Grady, has been moved from Portlaoise to Castlerea prison in preparation for his release.

O'Hare, who was known as the 'Border Fox', was deemed a qualifying prisoner under the Good Friday Agreement because he is a member of the INLA. No date has yet been fixed for his release.
