The Minister for Justice has ruled out extending the terms of the Morris Tribunal looking into allegations of Garda corruption in Donegal.

Michael McDowell said that he believed the terms were already wide enough.

He told the Dáil tonight, on a Labour Party motion which also sought approval in advance for the legal costs of the McBrearty family, that he could not treat them any differently to the other parties at the Tribunal.

Minister McDowell said he believed the present terms would allow the Tribunal to investigate the actions of the then-Minister for Justice, the Department of Justice, the Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Labour Party had called on the Government to widen the terms of the Morris Tribunal.

Deputy Joe Costello said earlier in the Dáil debate that they were also seeking the payment of the McBrearty family's legal costs, in the same way those of the Haemophilia Society were paid at the Lindsay Tribunal.

The McBrearty family arrived at Leinster House a short time before the debate got underway.
