Indonesian police say that the man suspected of masterminding last month's Bali bomb blasts has confessed to planning the explosions. The country's police chief said the man, Imam Samudra, has admitted holding meetings to plan the 12 October blasts which killed almost 200 people.

The 35-year-old engineer was arrested earlier this week as he tried to board a ferry from Java to Sumatra. Two men believed to be his bodyguards were also arrested, bringing the total number of people arrested to five.

Police chief Da'i Bachtiar said that Samudra has also admitted taking part in church bombings in Indonesia in 2000, and an explosion in Jakarta last year. He said the detainee learnt to make bombs in Afghanistan, and police were investigating any possible links to a broader network.

Elsewhere, three Indonesian workers at a gas field operated by US oil and gas giant ExxonMobil in the nation's restive Aceh province have been abducted. Indonesian police confirmed the news and blamed the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).
