In Belfast, Remembrance Day was marked by a service at the Cenotaph, beside the City hall.
The procession of British military representatives, clergy and councillors was led by Belfast's High Sheriff in the absence of Sinn Féin Lord Mayor, Alex Maskey.
Mr Maskey said he was unable to attend because of a prior engagement.
In advance of Poppy Day however, Mr Maskey did meet officials from the Royal British Legion and, earlier this year, he placed a wreath at a First World War commemoration in Belgium.
Queen Elizabeth attended the largest Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in central London.
Thousands of war veterans and military personnel attended to remember those who died serving their country. A two minute's silence was observed at 11am.
President McAleese is due to attend an ecumenical service of remembrance in St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin this afternoon.
