Convicted drug dealer, John Gilligan, has succeeded in the High Court in overturning a confiscation order made against him by the Special Criminal Court.
The High Court ruled today that the Special Criminal Court does not have the jurisdiction to make such an order.
Last march, the Special Criminal Court ordered Gilligan to pay over €17m after ruling that he had benefited from importing over 17,500 kg of cannabis resin.
The State is likely to appeal today's ruling to the Supreme Court.
An order freezing John Gilligan's assets, secured by the Criminal Assets Bureau some years ago, remains in place.
