Fishing organisations have claimed an attempt is being made by the European Fisheries Commission to abolish the 50-mile "Irish Box" conservation area around the coast.

Fishing organisations have claimed an attempt is being made by the European Fisheries Commission to abolish the 50-mile "Irish Box" conservation area around the coast.

They say such a move would allow a huge increase in the number of Spanish boats fishing in the area and would seriously harm the Irish fishing industry.

The claim was made at a Dublin conference of the Marine Institute, which oversees marine research and development.

The matter will be raised with the EU Fisheries Commissioner, Franz Fischler, next week.
