The High Court has turned down an application by the former Dublin city and county official, George Redmond, who had wanted to stop his trial on corruption charges going ahead in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Mr Redmond claimed it was impossible for him to receive a fair trial because of media coverage of his affairs and conduct.

But Mr Justice Kearns said while there had been adverse publicity surrounding Mr Redmond, he was not satisfied that it would lead to the real risk of an unfair trial.

Mr Redmond's legal team had compiled a large quantity of newspaper and broadcast media coverage to support his claim that his trial has been prejudiced.

But the Director of Public Prosecution had claimed many of the articles and broadcasts had appeared before Mr Redmond had been charged and called the High Court application a disguised application for an adjournment.

Two years ago the Circuit Court granted an indefinite stay in the Charles Haughey case because of comments made by Tánaiste, Mary Harney.
