A spokesperson for the Dublin Archdiocese has confirmed that Cardinal Desmond Connell was last night met by heckling as he made a personal speech to a congregation in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral.

Cardinal Connell was presiding over a Mass to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the election of Pope John Paul II.

He took the opportunity to reiterate an apology for his failure to deal effectively with priests who abused children.

During his speech there was some heckling from the congregation, and a number of people were heard to call out "it's too late".

There was also a round of applause when the Cardinal finished speaking.
