Final submissions at McKevitt hearing

Updated: 19:58, Friday, 11 October 2002

Final submissions have been made by the two sides at a preliminary hearing ahead of the trial of the alleged leader of the Real IRA, Michael McKevitt.

The three judges of the Special Criminal Court have reserved their judgement and are expected to decide the case in two weeks' time.

The defence is seeking further disclosure of personal, financial and business documentation relating to the main prosecution witness, David Rupert, who infiltrated the Real IRA.

But the Irish, British and American authorities say the documents are not relevant and to disclose them would put lives at risk and threaten national security.

Mr McKevitt is accused of belonging to an illegal organisation and directing terrorism.
