The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution giving US President George W Bush authorisation to order military force against Iraq.
Earlier, the United States refused an Iraqi offer to allow US inspectors to search its weapons sites. The White House said it was not up to Iraq whether or not to allow inspections, but up to the United Nations.
Iraq had invited the United States to send officials to visit Iraqi sites suspected of producing weapons of mass destruction.
Abdul Tawab Mullah Hawaish, Deputy Prime Minister and the minister responsible for Iraq's weapons programmes, had given the invitation at a news conference in Baghdad. He denied US claims that Baghdad was developing weapons of mass destruction.
