A row over the future of the Carrickmines Castle in south Dublin looks set for the High Court, after protestors prevented excavation machinery moving on to the medieval site today.

The last phase of the M50 motorway is due to go through part of the site, but demonstrators are fighting to have the site retained.

This evening, protestors were savouring victory in the first battle of what could be a long war.

The Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan, says 60% of the site will be saved, but protestors say the percentage is much lower.

The first piece that is due to be relocated is the Castle's outer defensive wall, or fosse, to make way for a roundabout system.

The protestors, who style themselves Carrickminders, are examining their legal options.

The Council points out that the site has been extensively examined by archaeologists at a cost of €6 million. It recognises there is opposition to their motorway plan, but seems determined to push it through.

The row now looks destined for the Four Courts.
