Donaldson says IRA must disappear

Updated: 14:36, Sunday, 22 September 2002

The Ulster Unionist MP Jeffrey Donaldson has said the IRA must disappear before his party will consider sharing power with Sinn Féin after the 18 January deadline adopted yesterday.

Mr Donaldson said the IRA's organisation, structure, weapons and threat must all go.

The Lagan Valley MP said the UUP had adopted the policy of Fianna Fáil in refusing to share power with Sinn Féin until the IRA has disbanded.

The North's Deputy First Minister, Mark Durkan has said the Ulster Unionist Party is attempting to turn the clock backwards on the Good Friday Agreement.

The SDLP leader said David Trimble has now become no more than a sandwich board man for the anti-Agreement Unionists.
