The troubled telecommunications company, WorldCom, has announced it is to lay off 2,000 people from its operations in Europe.

WorldCom employs 160 people in Ireland. Recently the company let 20 employees go.

A spokesperson for the company in Ireland said it would be some weeks before the impact of these latest cuts on Ireland would be known. However, consultations with staff have started.

The company says it is still committed to the Irish market, where it has 7,000 customers.

25% of the company's workforce in the UK are to lose their jobs. It is thought the balance of the 2,000 job cuts will come from operations in France and Germany.
