Preliminary results of a post mortem examination on the body of a 27-year-old man found in Cork City last night have indicated that he died of head injuries as a result of a severe beating.

Gardaí are conducting a murder investigation into the death of Derek O'Connell from Ascension Heights, Knocknaheeny in Cork.

His body was discovered last night near Blackrock Castle in the south of the city by a number of people out walking.

Gardaí have appealed to people who may have seen Mr O'Connell in the Blackrock and Mahon areas yesterday to contact them.

The Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, carried out a post mortem examination on Mr O'Connell's body at Cork University Hospital this afternoon.

It is understood Mr O'Connell was seen alive in Mahon yesterday afternoon, close to where his body was found.
