Authorities in the United States have charged five US citizens of Yemeni origin with "material support" for the al-Qaeda network. The five men were arrested in New York State on Friday.
A spokesman said the men had participated in the same training camp in Afghanistan as the American, John Walker Lindh, who is facing charges of conspiracy.
Police in Pakistan had earlier arrested two high-level al-Qaeda suspects in a series of raids in Karachi.
