Mary Harney said that there was no question of the Government investing additional money in IFI unless there was a strong viability plan for the company.

A meeting between the Minister and a high-level trade union delegation representing the 650 IFI workers ended after an hour of discussions.

IFI has fertiliser and ammonia manufacturing plants in Cork, Arklow and Belfast.

Production in Ireland has been made uncompetitive by rising manufacturing costs and the current overcapacity in the European market.

A Finnish company, Kemira, pulled out of negotiations about buying the company.

Unions fear that the company could collapse with the loss of hundreds of jobs unless the shareholders - the State and ICI - invest €15m.
