Dublin South West TD, Conor Lenihan, said that the decision on Stadium Ireland would cause strains within the Coalition.

Yesterday, the Coalition ruled out the use of taxpayers' money to build a stadium.

The Department of Finance and the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism will instead explore the possibility of private sector funding for a stadium at Abbotstown.

Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy, defended the move saying all pre-election promises were dependent on continued growth in the economy.

Mr McCreevy added that governments everywhere had to take appropriate action at certain times.

He also said Fianna Fáil's programme for Government as outlined in the party's General Election manifesto might not be fully implemented.

Earlier today Fine Gael described the Government's handling of the proposed national stadium as 'a shambles'.

Speaking on RTE radio, Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, said there should be widespread consultation and discussion with interested groups on the way forward.
