US embassy in Jakarta, Closed over security fears
On the eve of the anniversary of the attacks on New York and Washington, the United States has issued a warning of the threat of new terror strikes against its interests worldwide.
In Washington and New York, defences are being put in place to protect the skies. Fighter aircraft are patrolling the air space and anti-aircraft missile systems are being moved to key sites in the cities.
US embassies around the world have also taken security measures.
The American embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, will be closed tomorrow. The US embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, has cancelled a commemorative service for those killed in the terrorist attacks for security reasons.
The American embassy in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, also closed today because of a threat while yesterday, the US embassy in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and one of its consulates in the country were ordered to close over fears for security.
The American ambassador to Jakarta, Ralph Boyce, said he believed al-Qaeda was behind the threats.
