Forum on Fluoridation
Examined scientific evidence about fluoridation of water
The Minister for Health has said scientific evidence has shown that there are no adverse affects of adding fluoride to our water.
Mícheal Martin was launching the report of the Forum on Fluoridation which was set up to examine scientific evidence about fluoridation of water.
A number of dentists' and doctors' organisations accused the Minister of forcing a chemical on the public which they claim can be damaging to health.
A number of disorders have been linked to fluoride use, including osteoporosis and irritable bowel syndrome.
The chairman of the forum, Professor Patrick Foterell, formerly of University College Galway, said any representations to the forum had to be backed up by scientific evidence.
Irish dentists opposing fluoridation say increasing numbers of children have suffered damage to their teeth because of swallowing fluoride. They say the condition affects 40% of children and teenagers.
