Police in Germany have arrested a 24-year-old Turkish national who was in possession of a large quantity of material that could be used to make explosives.
He was arrested near the southwestern German town of Heidelberg.
According to an early report from tomorrow's edition of the daily newspaper, Bild, the man is suspected of plotting to attack on US establishments.
It said investigators were also probing any possible link to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terror network.
According to the German television station, ZDF, the man's girlfriend was also arrested.
The German Interior Minister, Otto Schily, warned recently that while al-Qaeda had been weakened, the EU and the US were still in danger of potential attacks.
Next Wednesday marks the first anniversary of the 11 September suicide plane attacks, which killed almost 3,000 people in New York and Washington and which were blamed on Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
The suspected ringleader in the 11 September attacks, Mohammed Atta, who died along with 18 other hijackers, ran an al-Qaeda cell in the northern German city of Hamburg.
