Arab foreign ministers have begun a two-day meeting at the Arab League in Cairo.
The meeting is expected to focus on US threats to topple the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and Israeli-Palestinian violence.
About 20 foreign ministers from the Arab League's 22 member states, including the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Naji Sabri, are due to attend the meeting, which is held twice a year.
For the first time, the Arab League has invited a representative of Arab-Americans to attend the meeting.
The Arab League has said that all Arab states are opposed to US military action against Iraq, which Washington claims is developing weapons of mass destruction.
However one Arab League official said that the ministers attending the meeting could call on Iraq to readmit UN weapons inspectors as part of efforts to avert a strike.
The Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, which erupted in September 2000, and this week's collapse of peace talks between the Sudanese government and southern rebels will also be discussed.
