Up to 40 people are reported to have been killed in a multiple-vehicle accident on a road in central Nigeria.

A local newspaper reported that the victims were burnt beyond recognition on Monday near Anyigba town in Kogi State, when a fuel-carrying truck burst into flames after ramming into four other vehicles.

The occupants of the vehicles and roadside traders were killed in the inferno.

The newspaper said the accident was caused by the driver of a pick-up truck who disregarded a stop sign before entering an expressway.

Elsewhere on the same day, 25 people were killed when a passenger bus ran into a stationary truck on a road in southwest Nigeria.
