The Catholic archbishop of Sydney has taken leave amid a church inquiry into sex abuse allegations made against him.

A retired judge is investigating accusations that George Pell had molested a twelve-year-old boy while he was a trainee priest in Melbourne.

Archbishop Pell emphatically denied the claims, but said he would step aside until the inquiry is completed.

The church's National Committee for Professional Standards, which deals with clerical sex abuse allegations, said the person making the accusations had not reported the matter to the police, despite being encouraged to do so.
