Updated: 09:09, Thursday, 15 August 2002

The government of Sri Lanka and the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have agreed on a date for the start of formal peace talks.

After discussions in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, the two sides confirmed that negotiations would begin in mid-September in Thailand.

The rebels have been fighting for almost 20 years for an ethnic Tamil state in the north of the country.

The group was banned in 1998.
