Iranian leader warns of war-like global mood

Updated: 20:20, Tuesday, 13 August 2002

The Iranian President, Mohammad Khatami, has said the United States had created a "war-like" global atmosphere since 11 September.

He was speaking on the first visit to Afghanistan by an Iranian head of state in four decades.

He warned that military action, like the US-led campaign against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, could spark further global instability throughout the world.

He pledged to Afghan leader Hamid Karzai to arrest al-Qaeda militants and stay out of Afghanistan's internal affairs.

Relations between the neighbouring countries had been poor during the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
