Updated: 07:57, Sunday, 11 August 2002

United Nations peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo say they have discovered a second mass grave with 38 bodies near the northeastern town of Bunia.

The town has recently been the scene of heavy fighting involving ethnic militias and Ugandan troops.

The bodies were found in a village outside the headquarters of a rebel faction on Friday. Many of the dead are women and children.

On Thursday, peacekeepers discovered a separate mass grave containing 37 bodies on a farm outside Bunia.

The UN spokesman in Kinshasa, Hamadoun Toure, says an investigation into the latest incident is already under way.
