An elderly couple have died in a house fire in Crossmolina in County Mayo.

An elderly couple have died in a house fire in Crossmolina in County Mayo.

They have been named as 85-year-old Donal O'Neill, a retired ESB worker, and his wife, Una.

The alarm was raised shortly after 9.30pm last night by a neighbour who noticed smoke coming from the two storey house on Chapel Road.

The bodies of the husband and wife were found in the sitting room. It is believed they were overcome by fumes.

Gardaí say no foul play is suspected. Fire officers have been trying to establish the cause of the blaze.
