A powerful explosion in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad has killed and wounded many people and caused widespread damage.

Some reports say there were at least twelve deaths, but the deputy provincial governor said about 40 people were killed.

It remains unclear what caused the blast, but some reports say it could have been a car bomb aimed at blowing up a nearby dam.

Other reports suggest it was an accident involving explosives used in road building.
