The father of murdered Loyalist Volunteer Force leader, Billy Wright, has met the Northern Secretary, Dr John Reid, at Stormont.

Billy Wright was shot dead by the INLA in the Maze Prison in December 1997. The case is one of six cases that is to be examined by retired Canadian Judge Peter Cory.

David Wright claimed after today's meeting that the independence of the enquiry into the killing of his son, as well as the five other controversial cases, was being compromised.

Mr Wright said five officials from the Northern Ireland Office were assisting the judge, who he said should appoint his own staff instead.

The 76-year-old judge was appointed by the Irish and British governments to investigate unsolved murders involving allegations of collusion by security forces on both sides of the Irish border, to determine if there should be public inquiries.

Relatives of those killed met Judge Cory for the first time in Dublin earlier this month.

It is understood he will first examine the death of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane, who was shot dead by the Ulster Defence Association at his home in February 1989.

The judge is also to investigate the deaths of Lord Justice Maurice and Lady Cecily Gibson, who were killed in an IRA bomb attack on the border in April 1987, and Rosemary Nelson, who was killed by loyalists in Lurgan in March 1999.

The murders of two senior RUC officers, Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan, who were shot by the IRA on the border as they returned from a meeting with Gardaí in Dundalk in March 1989 will also be examined.

The appointment of Judge Cory fulfilled a commitment made by the Irish and British governments following the Weston Park talks last summer.
