Population tops 3.9 million

The census conducted in April this year shows that the population of the State increased by nearly 300,000 in the previous six years to reach its highest level since 1871.

A preliminary report now puts the population at just over 3.9 million.

The population in Dublin has increased by 6.1%, while Meath and Kildare both registered increases of over a fifth between 1996 and 2002.

Cork City was the only administrative county in the State to register a population decline, while for the first time on record the population of Leitrim has shown an increase. The Connacht County has increased by 3% since 1996.
