The President and the Taoiseach have attended the National Day of Commemoration Ceremony in Dublin, honouring all Irish people who died in wars or on service with the United Nations.
The next-of-kin of those who died on UN service and relatives of the 1916 leaders also attended, as did members of the Government, the Council of State, the Diplomatic Corps and the Judiciary.
The ceremony, at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, began with a multi-faith prayer service attended by representatives of the Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland, the Presbyterian Church, Methodist Church and the Jewish community.
President Mary McAleese laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland.
