33 trapped miners found dead in Ukrainian mine

Updated: 15:00, Sunday, 7 July 2002

33 miners died in a fire that raged through a coal mine in eastern Ukraine earlier today.

The Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry said they had found the bodies of the miners and that they were all dead.

The miners had been trapped by a fire which broke out overnight about 570 metres underground at the ageing Donbass coalfield.

Rescue workers attempted to free 33 coal miners, and succeeded in freeing 100 other miners earlier.

It is the latest of a long series of mining tragedies to plague the ex-Soviet state.

Last year, about 300 miners died in Ukraine's ageing and deep coal mines, plagued by poor working conditions, poor safety and a lack of funds for modernisation.
