Fine Gael is calling on the Transport Minister, Seamus Brennan, to explain why a banker has been appointed to head the body charged with delivering the LUAS light rail project in Dublin.

Fine Gael's Denis Naughten said the selection appeared to fly in the face of the requirements which, as advertised, stated the successful candidate would have a proven track record in delivering major engineering projects.

He claimed that the appointment of the new Chief Executive to the Railway Procurement Agency begged serious questions.

Mr Naughten suggested that a similar approach was taken in the United Kingdom which failed, and the appointment made here was in danger of sounding "the death knell for the development of rail transport in Ireland".
