The discussions were jointly hosted by Northern Secretary John Reid and the Irish Foreign Affairs Minister, Brian Cowen.

Emerging from a four-and-a-half hour meeting involving the two governments Mr Reid said there was an acceptance by everyone that they would have to resolve problems in the peace process together.

The meeting was attended by the Ulster Unionists, Sinn Fein, the SDLP, Alliance, the Progressive Unionists and the Women's Coalition.

The talks took place against a background of growing Unionist concern over alleged IRA involvement in Colombia and in orchestrating street violence in parts of Belfast. Sinn Féin has denied the claims.
