A report out today indicates that children as young as three from Catholic families in the North are twice as likely to have formed a dislike for police compared to Protestant infants.

The University of Ulster study looked at community divisions. It found that 15% of six-year-olds were making sectarian comments.

One of the researchers, Dr Paul Connolly, said that the separate education of the two denominations had a bearing on the findings.

A number of education policy initiatives have been recommended to tackle the early negative influences.

Three hundred and fifty two children across the North were questioned for the survey.

The survey found that three-year-old Protestant children were twice as likely to prefer the Union Jack to the Irish tricolour as Catholics of the same age.

By the age of six, a third of children surveyed had identified with one of the two main communities.
